Shortly before the Fifth Pass, a small ship was sailing in the deeper waters, searching for fish. Unfortunately, a large hurricane passed over it, causing the ship to go further South than they normally dared. Usually the loss would have been ignored, but the captain was the son of the Lord of Half Circle Sea Hold. The Lord raised such a fit that Benden riders were dispatched to find the ship. After nearly two turns of searching, the crew was found, alive and well, on the shores of the Southern Continent. And so the lushness of Pern's Southern Continent was discovered.
Because of the intermittent Pass, exploration was put off until the end of the pass. After much exploring, a place near the Black River was chosen for a Weyr. The founder was Sapphos of Gold Lioth, thus becoming the namesake for both Weyr and Hold. For a while, all went well. Deep Trees, the second Hold, was founded and the population began to climb. Lioth laid Aiyleth, who Impressed to Mjrn. Mjrn became Senior Weyrwoman in 1093 when Lioth stopped rising. Shortly after, Sapphos died. She did not see the horror that ran through the Southern Continent only two years after her death.
Just after Mjrn took control, a horrible plague began to run through the Holds and Weyr. The Rupture Disease would infect only men and cause a blockage in the penis. The blockage would cut off urination, leading to a ruptured bladder and massive internal bleeding. The disease was spread through sexual contact (both men--especially green riders--and women could carry the disease), which hit the Weyr the hardest. Male dragonriders dropped left and right. The last bronze rider took to the air, mating with Aiyleth and making a clutch of twenty. The Weyrleader died shortly after.
As a precaution, Mjrn ordered that all the candidates be women. Most of the male dragon riders who remained were blue and green riders, and even then the numbers were waning. When the clutch hatched, the only riders in the Weyr were two green riders, a blue rider, and Mjrn. Fortune placed a gold egg in the clutch. As the eggs hatched, certain oddities came about.
In that first clutch, all three bronzes went between out of stubbornness. Every other dragonet found a girl. The gold chose a young woman named Beiz. For a while, browns mated with golds. It was from these matches that a bronze finally came onto the sands in one of Litarath's clutches. The bronze Rugoth chose a woman named Syrima, whom he renamed S'rim. He went on to catch Litarath in 1130, thus producing the first fighting gold and red feline. Unfortunately, the Weyrwoman didn't know that the gold was sterile. The miserable Beiz jumped from her Weyr after the Hatching. Fortunately, the red feline turned out to be able to clutch when needed, and she laid a single gold egg on her maiden flight.
When Charisbyd's gold Mehranth began rising, the other mutations appeared, and bronzes began Impressing to women without complaint. By then the disease was almost gone, but precaution made Pern turn to artificial insemination and carefully timed sex. Females began being Searched from the North in secret, as the Weyrs of the North began ignoring Sapphos out of principle. Vaccines were made, but few were both effective and safe.
Finally, it came down to the year 1242. A safe vaccine was finally made, and men could now Stand for Impression. Unfortunately, a heart attack killed the Senior Weyrwoman one year prior to the vaccine, leaving the young junior as the only queen in the Weyr. With a young head full of dreams, she made changes that Sapphos Weyr that many would not even attempt. Search was open to boys, and for the first time in over a century, a boy Impressed a Green on the Southern Continent.
But things did not stay that way for long. A cheetah murdered her bronze brother on the Sands, in a way more brutal than anyone could imagine, and placed his severed head at the foot of her rider, a boy. Then she killed a Weyrling dragon, out of revenge, leaving a girl lost without her Teerananth. Boys Impressed cougars, browns, and, in a bold slap to the face on a Sands where men would once never be allowed to stand, a red, a gold, a rare white tiger feline, and two new mutations that should have gone to girls, as proper.
With several things going wrong, many have started blaming the presence of male riders, as transfers and weyrlings alike. Blasphemous was the victory of bronze Yeskith and his rider M'tias--the Wingleaders found themselves being led by a man. To Sapphos Weyr, times are changing, and mindsets will clash. And all the while, the Star spins closer to Pern...
